AirPlay & the Classroom

 Students with iPads

I’m using the term ‘Game Changer’ a lot lately… it may be over dramatic, and may cause for some to be underwhelmed.  However, this I see as being a collaborative and learning from learners ‘GAME CHANGER.’

Not sure if anyone is doing this yet, but here is the idea.  For $100, hook an Apple TV up to the classroom projector.  Have your students get out their iPads, or iDevices and work through some learning experiences (using Apps, research, in small groups… whatever).

With the new iOS 5 coming out on the October 12, they will be able to push through AirPlay to the projector and do whole group share of the work they are doing and the ideas they come up with.  This will/should be met with some challenges like who is sharing when? Who is controlling the sharing, etc… but never before – on call – or on the fly could each and every student be directing the learning experience and sharing their creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration to the whole class in this digital method.  (yeah, yeah… I know we’ve done this before with thumb drives or emailing power points to the teacher and sharing from one workstation… kind of clumsy… that’s NOT at all what I’m talking about here).  I’m talking about student’s as consumers of learning, and producers in the learning experience – collective intelligence stuff.

I’m here to tell you that I have tried this…and it is glorious. I’ve already ordered some Apple TVs in preparation.

Now, if I could only easily do screen recordings on the iPad screen for tutorial videos.

I’ve got you covered… There are some devices to do the capture.
