iPad 1 to iPad 2 – mission complete

This is a STEP BY STEP Guide to moving from the 1st gen iPad to the iPad 2.  Complete with reasons why.

When the iPad 2 was released a couple of weeks ago, I said to everyone who asked: “nah, I’m not going to run out and buy a new iPad 2 just because its new…”  Basically, my point was that I didn’t need the latest and greatest, even though I really do use my iPad more than I originally thought I would.  I took some time to think this through and asked several questions to my self.

The main question: Since the iPad is a secondary device, what is the main reason why I carry my laptop with me some/most days? (I don’t have the data breakdown)?   Answer: For projection. Early on when trying to carry only my secondary slate (iPad), I found myself in situations where I needed to project some things. Since the first generation iPad did not project everything, I was limited and therefore had to carry my laptop.

Needless to say, I picked up a new iPad 2 with full video mirroring for projection goodness.  In the process, I’m selling the 1st gen iPad (wifi + 3G) and changing my data personal plan/policy.

STEP BY STEP Guide:

  1. Step One: Do a complete back up of your iPad.
  2. Step Two: Sell your 1st gen iPad 3G (or at least find a buyer).
  3. Step Three: Go to your local AT&T (or Verizon) store and change your data plan for your phone.  I got the concept my new plan from this source (Why You Can Probably Skip Buying 3G on an iPad 2). Essentially, I bought an iPad 2 that is wifi only.  I changed my cellular data plan to include “mobile hotspots.”  The advantages of this concept greatly out way that of having a 3G cell phone and a 3G iPad.  Now my laptop has a connection to jump on when no wifi is available, and the iPad gets tricked to do some “wifi only” saucy-ness when linked to the hotspot from my cell phone.
  4. Step Four: Buy the cheapest version of the new iPad 2 (with you money you gained from your sell, this should not be a devastating cost delta)
  5. Step Five: Restore and Sync/  Done.

This is the web site that helped me copy all of my goodies from the 1st gen to the iPad 2 with ease.
