NxGL … A Podcast Primer…

Below is an outline for today’s discussion.  Resources are linked.  First, let’s discuss what a Podcast is.  In it’s simplest form, a podcast is an audio recording with intent to distribute (my definition). We can get into enhanced Podcasts (images with audio, sometimes adding chapters for easy scrubbing). OR we can get into Vodcasts, Screencasts, or mediacasts. Today, the trend is moving towards Vodcasts or MediaCasts.  However, an original audio only Podcast can still be worth way more than the time it takes to create it.

  • Microphones, Blue SnowBall, basic.
  • Smart Phone (w/ microphone; video – shoot horizontal)
  • Camera’s (onboard, or USB)
  • iPad (w/ microphone; iPod nano – with mic )
  • Document Camera (Pv2)
  • Lighting
  • Teleprompters ( Example 1Example 2 )

  • Audacity (open)
  • Cam Studio (open)
  • Jing (pro)
  • ScreenFlow (mac only)
  • Web-based Screen Recording (Screencast-o-Matic)
  • Export from KeyNote, PowerPoint (show examples)
  • MovieMaker (included on PC)
  • iMovie (included on Mac)
  • QuickTime (included)
  • WebEx (problems?), Lync (site | pic)
  • uStream / YouTube Live

Strategies:

  • Write your script first. Storyboard. Use a common template
  • Is your content going to be packaged or live or live archived?
  • How are you going to distribute?
  • Video – still images (screenshots from computer, phone, slate, etc.) with audio
  • Video – use other tools for nice animation (Prezi or PowerPoint)
  • Video – use video capture tools (cameras, etc.); shoot offline and import.

  • Recording Skype Calls
